St. Elmo's Fire is a striking natural phenomenon, a form of corona discharge. It looks like lightning but isn't, and may in fact protect airplanes from strikes. Here it is filmed from inside the cockpit.

This plasma appears in objects that are pointed or that conduct electricity well when there is a large difference in atmospheric electrical potential.
