The lockpicking lawyer can open a fancy electronic-timed padlock in about half a second with a shim, but that's too easy. Why not open it with an electromagnetic pulse?
You don't need to be an electrical engineer to know that sensitive electronics don't like random pulses of electricity appearing out of nowhere.
